Vacancy for an Cultural and Linguistic Mediator, Save the Children’s Refugees and Migrants Crisis in Serbia – National Post

Save the Children in Serbia seeks Cultural and Linguistic Mediators, based in Preševo, Dimitrovgrad and/or Šid.

The job holder’s role is:

 Support communication and understanding, both on linguistic and cultural level, between beneficiaries and Serbia Refugee and Forced Migration Crisis emergency team.
 Providing general support during field activities, general office support, translation services and other ad-hoc duties as required and may be required to liaise with the local authorities, key partner organisations and other stakeholders and agencies relevant to the sector.
 Please note that the position may entail night shifts.

Duration of the post: 4 months with possibility of an extension.


Level 3 – the responsibilities of the post may require the post holder to have regular contact with or access to children or young people

The successful candidate should have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities through a combination of formal schooling, self-education, prior experience, or on-the-job training.

• Completion of Secondary School Education with post-Secondary training/certificate in the relevant functional area is desired but not mandatory.
• Minimum 2 to 4 years of previous relevant work experience;
• Excellent knowledge (both spoken and written) of English and/or Serbian (preferably both)
• Excellent knowledge (both spoken and written) in Arabic, Farsi and/or Urdu
• Knowledge of one or more than one of the following languages will be considered a strong asset: Urdu, Dari, Bengali, Pashtu, Kurdish, Turkish, Somali and French
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, intercultural sensitivity and teamwork
• Strong computer skills, including the use of Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and operational use of keyboard in Arabic, Farsi and/or Urdu
• High ability to adapt to flexible working hours, long field visits, an intense and stressful circumstances and a workload
• Ability to work independently and proactively
• Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills and discretion with confidential information
• Commitment to upholding Save the Children’s Child Safeguarding Policy, as well as principles of do no harm and confidentiality.

• Approachable, good listener, easy to talk to.
• Training in interpreting or in intercultural mediation
• Knowledge or experience of NGOs / humanitarian work
• Experience in working with forced migrants or other vulnerable populations
• Strong understanding of the child protection in emergencies
