UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background:

The Republic of Serbia is a signatory to a number of important international treaties, which guarantee the equality of men and women and prohibit gender-based discrimination, most notably the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and the Istanbul Convention. National commitments on gender equality are in place, such as the National Strategy and Action Plan for Gender Equality and the Gender Equality Law. Despite the existing legal and policy framework, gender inequalities are prominent in Serbia and present in all spheres of life, in access to resources, in participation to decision-making processes and in interpersonal relations.
In the period 2015-2017, UN Women programme office in Serbia is committed to work towards selected development results in the impact areas of: women’s economic empowerment, combating violence against women, supporting the women, peace and security agenda and enhancing gender responsive policy making and budgeting. The Development Results Framework (DRF) for Serbia will be implemented in the framework of the Strategic Plan for Europe and Central Asia 2015-2017 of the UN Women Regional Office in Istanbul, Turkey.
UN Women is working with different national and UN partners, in the framework of several projects, some of which are ongoing and others expected to be undertaken in the forthcoming period. UN Women is supporting integration of gender perspective in national and provincial level budgeting and the development assistance (EU and bilateral assistance), in partnership with the Coordination Body on Gender Equality, the Ministry of Finance, the Serbian European Integration Office and the Provincial Secretariat for Economy, Employment and Gender Equality. Support to strengthening capacities of national equality machinery to carry out their mandates is ongoing, in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding with the Coordination Body on Gender Equality. In the forthcoming period, UN Women is planning to work on strengthening local governance, planning and management capacities through introduction of new, and improvement of existing procedures and processes in line with the principles of good governance and gender equality; and supporting creation of the enabling legislative and policy environment in line with international standards on gender equality.
UN Women is looking for an Intern to support programme activities in Serbia in a variety of fields.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Gender Specialist, the intern will be have the opportunity to get engaged on the following assignments:
Supporting research on different topics in the field of gender equality that would support the work of UN Women and its partners;
Collecting data and other statistics on relevance for UN Women programming and drafting briefs, overviews and reports in specific areas;
Supporting the organization of activities implemented by UN Women or its partners, such as workshops, trainings, coordination meetings, media events, etc. Expected support will be in the form of:event organization and logistics; materials preparation and minute-taking as necessary; support to work of experts engaged for the activities, communicating and liaising with relevant stakeholders etc.;
Monitoring developments in the field of gender equality in Serbia and preparing regular updates for use by UN Women and its partners;
Coordinating, drafting inputs and ensuring regular updating of UN Women section on UN Serbia website, knowledge database and dissemination of relevant products and publications to partners.
The working hours of the intern will be flexible and mutually agreed upon with the UN Women Belgrade office.
The internship programme offers unique learning opportunities for interns, exposing them to the work of the United Nations at country level, and enriching their educational experience through practical work in an international organization, with a focus on gender equality.

Required Skills and Experience


The intern must have studies in or other similar subject at the university level.
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent).


Native Serbian speaker;
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required.
Other skills / personal interests:
Full computer literacy with MS Word, Excel, Power Point;
Commitment, interest, and knowledge in the area of women’s right and gender equality;
Strong communication and organization skills;
Personal initiative, curiosity, and the respect for differences in a multicultural environment;
Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.
